America Needs a Moral Reckoning. Here’s What That Actually Means.

In January 2026, Salon published: “America Needs a Moral Reckoning in 2026.” The piece described the current moment as a “moral calamity” that demands a great reckoning if democracy is to survive.

Strong words. But are they wrong?

White House grounds converted to an entertainment venue. 47.9 million Americans food insecure. A president who profited $187 million from cryptocurrency while controlling its regulators. A Congress where members face rape allegations and still collect paychecks. A housing market that has made ownership a luxury. A global corruption index at its lowest in a decade. Anti-corruption standards — abandoned on day one.

This is not a political problem. This is a spiritual emergency.

“The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” — Albert Einstein

A reckoning doesn’t mean burning everything down. It means sitting with the truth of what is, without flinching. Calling exploitation by its name. Refusing to trade your conscience for comfort.

Frederick Douglass didn’t wait for the country to be ready. Harriet Tubman didn’t wait for permission. John Lewis didn’t wait until it was safe. They acted from moral clarity in the middle of moral chaos.

That is what is being asked of this generation. Not tomorrow. Not after the next election. Now.

Isaiah 1:17 — “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.”

It starts with one person who decides they’ve seen enough and chooses to act differently. Will that be you?
