In 2021, the expanded Child Tax Credit brought child poverty in America down to 5.2% — the lowest in recorded history. It proved something important: targeted investment could lift children out of poverty fast.
Then it expired. Child poverty climbed back to 13.4%. That’s 10 million children below the poverty line. And the federal government’s 2025 response was to cut SNAP at a level that has no precedent in the program’s history.
We proved we could fix it. Then we chose not to.
