A teacher in Cumberland, Rhode Island has been arrested and fired after allegedly assaulting three special-needs students inside a classroom meant to protect and educate them.

Police say Djamila Vaz Rosa faces three felony counts of second-degree child abuse after allegedly slapping students in the head inside the transitional learning center at Blackstone Valley Prep. The school reports the incident occurred on February 10 and that the teacher, who had worked there for less than three months, was immediately placed on administrative leave and terminated the next morning.

Authorities began investigating after the school notified police. During that investigation, a third family came forward with a similar allegation involving the same teacher. Following the inquiry, an arrest warrant was issued and Vaz Rosa turned herself in to police.
